Competency-based training is the modern way of training pilots where airlines and organizations use graded competencies to adjust and tweak their training program, addressing what is needed for that specific organization or airline.
There are the 9 ICAO competencies:
Application of Procedure (AOP)
Communication (COM)
Leadership and Teamwork (LTW)
Problem Solving and Decision Making (PSDM)
Situation Awareness (SA)
Workload Management (WLM)
Application of Knowledge (AOK)
Flight Path Management - Automation (FMA)
Flight Path Management - Manual Control (FMM)
By addressing competency rather than flying a specific maneuver, the pilot group gets better and safer. This shifts the focus away from the old-school approach of repeating maneuver after maneuver without ever addressing the core issue.
But what is a competency? It is gathered around skills, knowledge, and attitude:
Skills: The physical and mental ability to fly the aircraft and operate its systems smoothly.
Knowledge: Understanding the technical information, regulations, and aircraft systems.
Attitude: The professional behavior, mindset, and discipline brought to the cockpit.
